Everyone is eligible for online drivers education in Texas! Whether you are under or over the age of 18, you can complete your drivers education online or in-person. Both options have their pro’s and con’s but we welcome you to both!

Yes it does! For teens under the age of 18, at the end of Module 1 (first 6 hours), you’ll take the state-approved DPS written test. Successfully completing this test means you won’t need to take the Written Knowledge Test at the DPS.

For adults 18+, the test appears at the end of the 6 hour course.

Both teens and adults must score at least 70% to pass these tests.

If you don’t pass the first time, you can retake the exam later. There’s no limit to how many times you can retake the test, and you won’t have to pay any additional fees to do so.

Successfully completing this test means you won’t need to take the Written Knowledge Test at the DPS.

Once you’ve obtained your permit from the DPS, you can begin the 44 required behind-the-wheel hours. These 44 consist of the 14 hours of driving lessons and 30 hours of practice driving. 14 + 30 = 44 hours of driving total.

You’ll need to complete 14 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with your official parent instructor or a CERTIFIED driving school like Austin Driving School. This includes 7 hours where you’ll observe the parent instructor driving, and 7 hours where the parent instructor will observe you. These hours should be recorded in the Behind-the-Wheel Instruction Log included in the PTDE packet.

In addition, you must complete 30 hours of behind-the-wheel practice with any licensed adult who is at least 21 years old. At least 10 of these hours must be done at night. You’ll document these hours in the Behind-the-Wheel Practice Log of the PTDE packet.

Parent-taught driver education in Texas allows a parent, stepparent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent or legal guardian to teach their teenager how to drive. Parents and legal guardians may also designate an alternate instructor who must meet the same eligibility requirements.

No, driving lessons and driving practice hours are not required for adults over the age of 18. However, you will still need to pass the DPS road test. So, we always recommend getting a few driving lessons from a certified school and of course, practicing as much as you possibly can!

If you start as a parent-taught instructor and decide later that you would rather do your driving lessons with us, you can transfer to us anytime.

You can do your DPS road test with us, or your local DPS. If you take it with us, our certified instructors can help prepare you for the test and we also offer pre-test brush up lessons. If you decide to test with us, you will need a valid learner permit. Call us to schedule a road test anytime!

Technically, the only way you can fail our online courses is by giving up. You are allowed as many attempts as you need on the final exams.
